OUR SCOUTING PROGRAM
Building Strong Families
Our Pack was formed on December 8, 1938, in the Mahopac Central School. On that day, two things happened: First, the newly formed Pack was presented an American flag from the local American Legion, but more importantly, eleven boys were sworn in as the first scouts, thus blazing a way for all boys to follow for years to come.
Since that fateful day in Mahopac, numerous additional Packs had to be formed to accommodate the ever growing population. Since 1938, Mahopac has had well over 1500 scouts file through all those packs.
Our program is based in Austin Road Elementary School, but we welcome kids from any local school. We have boys and girls of all grades from Kindergarten through 5th grade. You can join at any age and any point in the year.
Teach Scouts not how to get a living, but how to live.
PACK ACTIVITIES
We meet as a Pack, which includes all of the grades, one time per month – usually on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00pm. We have gathering activities, flag / award ceremonies, and then some sort of group work/play that often involves “stations” that allow us to do multiple activities at one time. We also do service oriented projects (e.g., gifts for children with cancer, supplies for United for the Troops donations, adopting a family at holiday time).
DEN ACTIVITIES
In addition to the monthly Pack meetings, there are regular Den meetings that occur about once a month. Dens are just one grade of scouts, so they meet with their small group and work on their adventures together. These might include community activities like learning about the fire department, etc. Schedules are determined based on the Den leader’s and families’ schedules.
FAMILY SCOUTING
All siblings are welcome at all events, boys and girls alike. We include siblings in most of our activities to the extent that they are able to participate. Parents are required to stay with younger scouts and preferred to stay with our older scouts. We welcome all parent involvement, and our pack is as great as it is only because of all of the wonderful parent volunteers we have.
Annual Dues
Annually, we collect registration/dues in the amount of $200. The fee covers all of your scout’s awards, most of their activities, council registration dues, and general pack meeting expenses. There are some further expenses like the Pack trip and tickets for family members, that come up periodically.
See the Costs of Scouting section of our site for more information about the total costs of participating in scouts.
